FAQs/FAQs and Suggestions/Signing and Sharing Petitions

I signed a petition but I never authorized you to send out email in my name.

Petitions on Change.org work similarly to offline petitions. In an offline petition, your information goes directly to the target.

Here's an example scenario for how an offline petition works.

You sign a petition to support a local bill (let's call it Bill ABC123) that would protect the environment. This petition targets your state representative. Once the petition reaches its goal, the representative is contacted with the petition letter. It would look similar to this:

Dear (representative),

I, (your name), would like to express my support for Bill ABC123 to protect the environment. It is critical to the local economy and will help grow and sustain small businesses.

Thank you.

With Change.org, an email gets sent to the target of the petition instead of a physical letter. For more information on how Change.org handles your personal information, please read our Privacy Policy.

Now, that we know how to "NOT Have a petition sent"   Tell me-how can I send a petition-via Email to friend in my private address book?    Not your update Email, but a specific petition to a friend- a breathing friend that isn't an avatar.  I keep asking this question-and you haven't answered it yet

I believe you should NOT have the check in the box that says my name will be appearing publicly.  I am sure, there are a lot of people, who want to sign the petition without the name appearing publicly for privacy sake.  I am sure a lot of signers forget to uncheck the checkmark that you have in that box as the default.  I think it should be a blank box and if a person wants to have their name appear publicly, then that person can put the checkbox in.  The way it is now, like what just happened to me, the petition was sent and I forgot to uncheck it.

I would like to suggest that your "public" options be more flexible. I certainly understand that my name and some personal information needs to be ~ON~ the petition -but it is unclear what my "public signature" consists of. I might actually be pleased to have my name published publicly [on a case-by-case basis] but NOT my address or email. If there were an option on signing to choose "all personal information" or "just name" to display publicly, that would be great. Or even some clarity before I go ahead and hit "send." Just a thought. . .

Signators should not receive harassing emails from those opposed to the petition.

Just because I sign a petition, doesn't mean I want to receive news letters from the organization that started it.

I posted my petition as directed, but I have not seen it or heard from anyone. I usually get emails, and other petitions often but none lately and haven't been able to reach anyone. Please respond to my email address.
